December 7th, 1941. The Japanese naval attack on Pearl Harbor killed 2,403 Americans and drew the United States into the Second World War. President Roosevelt called it a day that will live in infamy. But did Roosevelt — or senior members of his administration — know the attack was coming and deliberately allow it to happen, to provide the pretext needed to enter a war that most Americans opposed?

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine one of the most debated questions in American military history — the Pearl Harbor advance knowledge theory. We trace the full documented history of US intelligence in the months before the attack, what signals were intercepted, what was decoded, and what reached the desk of those in command.

We examine the Magic intercepts — decrypted Japanese diplomatic communications that revealed Japan was preparing for military action in late 1941. We examine the specific warnings that reached Washington and the specific failures — or choices — that meant those warnings did not reach the commanders at Pearl Harbor in time. We examine the McCollum Memo, an internal naval intelligence document from October 1940 that proposed eight actions designed to provoke Japan into firing the first shot against the United States.

We examine what Roosevelt knew, what Churchill knew — and what British intelligence had communicated to Washington about Japanese intentions. We examine the specific ships that were moved out of Pearl Harbor in the days before the attack, which conspiracy theorists note included every aircraft carrier in the Pacific fleet while the older battleships were left in place.
