Episode 12: The Flat Earth Theory

In 2016, the Flat Earth theory experienced a remarkable viral revival. YouTube videos accumulated tens of millions of views. Flat Earth conferences sold out in cities across the United States and Europe. Celebrities and athletes declared publicly that they believed the Earth was flat. And for a brief period, one of the oldest debunked theories in human history became one of the most searched topics on the internet.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we take the Flat Earth theory seriously — not because we believe the Earth is flat, but because understanding why millions of people in the 21st century came to reject one of the most thoroughly verified facts in science tells us something important about the information environment we all now inhabit.

We examine the specific claims of modern Flat Earth theory: that the Earth is a disc rather than a sphere, that Antarctica is not a continent but a massive ice wall surrounding the edges of the disc, that NASA's photographs of a spherical Earth are computer-generated images, and that airlines, governments, scientists, and educators around the world are involved in a coordinated deception to conceal the true shape of our planet.

We examine the evidence flat earthers present: the apparent flatness of the visible horizon, the behaviour of water which they argue always finds its own flat level, the claim that long-distance flights in the Southern Hemisphere do not follow routes consistent with a globe, and the specific photographic anomalies they point to in NASA imagery.

We examine what the evidence for a spherical Earth actually consists of — not just "NASA says so," but the independent verification available to any person with basic equipment, including the curved shadow Earth casts on the Moon during lunar eclipses, the way ships disappear hull-first over the horizon, and the different star constellations visible from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
