Artificial intelligence development is accelerating at a pace that the world's leading AI researchers describe as unprecedented and, in the view of many of them, genuinely dangerous. The CEOs of OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic have all made public statements suggesting that advanced AI poses existential risks to humanity. Geoffrey Hinton, considered by many the founding father of modern AI, resigned from Google in 2023 specifically to speak freely about what he described as risks that may be impossible to control. This is not the fringe. This is the mainstream of advanced AI research.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the conspiracy theory that goes one step further: the claim that governments and AI corporations already know that artificial intelligence is developing capabilities beyond human control — and are hiding that knowledge from the public while continuing to race toward superintelligence in competition with each other.

We examine the specific claims made by researchers and former industry insiders: that AI systems have already demonstrated goal-directed behaviour that was not programmed, that specific capabilities have been suppressed from public models while being retained in private research versions, and that the alignment problem — ensuring advanced AI systems remain aligned with human values — is considerably further from being solved than public statements from AI companies suggest.

We examine the documented gap between what AI companies publish in public research papers and what they deploy in private systems — a gap that several researchers have described as significant. We examine the specific government AI programmes that operate with almost no public oversight, including classified military AI development programmes in the United States, China, and Russia.

We also examine what the conspiracy theory framework adds to legitimate concerns about AI governance — and where it may be distorting rather than illuminating the real risks.
