Car chat: Bittersweet Motherhood- Kids' Birthdays, Growing Up, and Holding On Without the Pressure

Car chat: Bittersweet Motherhood- Kids' Birthdays, Growing Up, and Holding On Without the Pressure

Today's episode is pretty raw and informal- it's a car chat I spontaneously recorded after my daughter's birthday. A bunch of emotions unexpectedly came up- and I PROMISE this is not a "cherish the little years" podcast episode- we don't need more of those- just an honest sharing from a mom in her luteal phase feeling six things at once.

Hope you enjoy! E

Show notes:

Kids' birthdays can bring up so many emotions - joy, gratitude, nostalgia, grief, tenderness, and sometimes a little anxiety too. In this episode of the Encourage Moment podcast, I'm sharing what came up for me as my second daughter turned five and how I've been thinking about motherhood, time, and the beautiful messiness of watching our kids grow.

This is not one of those "cherish every second" or "you'll never get these years back" episodes. We all hear enough of that. Instead, I'm talking honestly about the mixed feelings that come with milestones, and why I think motherhood needs less pressure and more compassion. Every season has beauty and challenge, and there's no need to turn one stage of childhood into a competition against another.

I also reflect on what it means to witness your child becoming more themselves, and how little kids have a way of mirroring back a kind of freedom and confidence we often lose as we get older. From silly socks to fancy dresses to unfiltered joy, children can remind us what it feels like to be fully ourselves before we start worrying so much about what other people think.

If you've ever felt emotional on your child's birthday, looked back at baby videos with a lump in your throat, or wondered how to hold on to the magic without spiraling into guilt, this conversation is for you.

In This Episode, We Cover:
  • The mixed emotions that can come up when your child turns another year older.

  • Why birthday feelings can be both joyful and heartbreaking at the same time.

  • The pressure-filled motherhood messaging around "cherishing every moment."

  • Why every stage of childhood has both beauty and challenge.

  • How little kids model confidence, delight, and self-expression.

  • What we lose as we get older, and what we can reclaim.

  • Why it matters to create a sturdy, loving home where kids can be fully themselves.

  • The tension between wanting to preserve childhood innocence and knowing some self-consciousness is inevitable.

  • How motherhood can bring us back into deeper connection with our own inner child.

  • A behind-the-scenes glimpse at a new, shame-free way to commemorate family moments.

Why This Episode Matters

Motherhood is full of thresholds — birthdays, first days, last days, and all the little in-between moments that remind us time is moving. This episode makes space for those feelings without shaming them or trying to fix them.

It's a reminder that you do not have to love every phase equally to be a good mom. You can miss the baby years and adore the big-kid years. You can feel sentimental and grounded at the same time. You can hold joy and grief together.
