Cassius Dio. Roman History, Book 56, chapters 18–24. The fullest ancient narrative of the battle, written two centuries after the events but drawing on earlier sources now lost. The most detailed account of the three-day engagement and the Roman collapse.
Florus. Epitome of Roman History, Book 2, chapter 30. Brief but vivid account of the battle; supplements Dio on specific details.
Josephus. Jewish War and Jewish Antiquities. The clearest account of Varus's tenure as governor of Syria and the suppression of the post-Herodian revolts.
Museum und Park Kalkriese, Bramsche-Kalkriese, Lower Saxony, Germany. The archaeological site, excavated since 1987. The museum's published catalogues and the ongoing archaeological reports are primary sources for the physical evidence: the silver cavalry mask, the earthen rampart, the scattered Roman equipment and bones. Irreplaceable evidence for the battle's location and character.
Suetonius. Life of Augustus, chapter 23. The court's reaction to the news: the torn clothes, the uncut hair, the cries of “Quinctili Vare, legiones redde.” Essential for Augustus's personal response and for the three legion numbers never reused.
Tacitus. Annals, Book 1, chapters 55–71. Germanicus's campaigns in Germany and the discovery of the battlefield in 15 CE. Chapters 61–62 are the most extraordinary passage in the literary record: the bones, the altars, the skulls on the trees, the soldiers weeping.
Tacitus. Annals, Book 2, chapter 88. The obituary of Arminius. The claim that Arminius is celebrated in Germanic song is the clearest acknowledgment in any Roman source of a Germanic tradition about the battle that the Roman literary record could not access.
Velleius Paterculus. Roman History, Book 2, chapters 117–120. The contemporary eyewitness source. Velleius knew Varus personally and served under Tiberius; his account is the closest in time and the most partial in perspective. Essential for the portrait of Varus and the Roman reaction.

Murdoch, Adrian. Rome's Greatest Defeat: Massacre in the Teutoburg Forest. Sutton Publishing, 2006. Solid narrative account; good on Arminius's career before and after the battle.
Wells, Peter S. The Battle That Stopped Rome: Emperor Augustus, Arminius, and the Slaughter of the Legions in the Teutoburg Forest. W. W. Norton, 2003. The best popular account incorporating the Kalkriese archaeology; excellent on the terrain and what the physical evidence reveals about the ambush's structure.
Barrett, Anthony A. Livia: First Lady of Imperial Rome. Yale University Press, 2002. For context on the Augustan court's reception of the disaster.
