Did Nolan Wells' Two Autopsies Come Back The Same?

There are two examinations of Nolan Wells and nobody outside a very small circle knows what either one says. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office handled the first. The family's legal team arranged the second, sending his body to Washington, D.C.

Neither result has been released. Cause and manner of death for the eighteen-year-old Ocean Springs athlete remain undetermined. Attorney Ben Crump indicated early on that the independent results would come quickly, and later said he hoped to share them soon.

Underneath it all is the credibility problem. Officials said they believed Nolan drowned and did not suspect foul play at a point when no completed autopsy existed. The same sheriff's office has stressed that investigators are working diligently to determine exactly what occurred. Those two positions have been sitting side by side for weeks.

There's the phone, too — carried off the island by his friends, according to Crump, and returned to the family with messages deleted, also according to Crump. His experts and county investigators agreed to a mutual inspection of the device.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath has told the Wells family the case will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation wraps. What charges look like when nobody will officially classify the death — and whether leaving someone behind on a barrier island ten miles out is a crime or just a regret — is what the mailbag keeps circling.
