What The Duggars Have That The Siders Never Will

Set the two families next to each other and the difference is not the crime. It is not the theology. It is the one thing money buys, and it changes everything about how these two stories end.

While Joseph Duggar sat in the Washington County jail waiting on extradition to Florida, his father sat down and wrote him. The email is a public record. Joseph has pleaded not guilty to two felonies in Florida involving a child under twelve. He and Kendra Duggar have also pleaded not guilty to four counts each of endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts each of false imprisonment in Arkansas. The state removed all four of their children.

Meanwhile, in Vinton County, Ohio, sixteen children were found in a twelve-by-twelve room. The sheriff said livestock has been kept in better conditions. Four members of the Siders family have pleaded not guilty to sixteen felony counts apiece.

Tony Brueski runs the two families against each other and finds the same machine underneath both. Children with no school records and no medical records. Homes nobody outside the family ever saw inside. Doors that only came open by accident — one because of a warrant about something unrelated, one because a tip reached a talk show's producers.

Then the money shows up. One grandfather walked out of an Ohio jail because a county of twelve thousand people could not afford his hospital bills. The other posted six hundred thousand dollars and hired private counsel.

Everybody wants to argue about who is worse. That is the wrong argument. The right one is who gets a defense.
