In a windowless building on the Yale University campus in New Haven, Connecticut, known simply as "The Tomb," an elite secret society has been initiating fifteen new members every year since 1832. Skull and Bones. Its alumni include three US presidents — William Howard Taft, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush — two of whom faced each other in the 2004 presidential election, meaning that whichever man America chose, a Bonesman would enter the White House. Its membership rolls have included senators, CIA directors, Supreme Court justices, media executives, and some of the most influential figures in American finance and foreign policy. For conspiracy theorists, the existence of Skull and Bones is not a theory — it is an acknowledged fact that raises an unanswered question: what exactly are these people doing in that building, and what does membership mean for how they exercise power afterward?

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine Skull and Bones — its history, its documented membership, its rituals as far as they have been exposed, and the specific claims that the society functions as a recruitment and coordination mechanism for a permanent American ruling class that operates above and outside democratic accountability.

The history of the society begins with William Huntington Russell, who founded it after returning from studies in Germany where he had encountered the model of elite secret fraternities. From its earliest decades, Skull and Bones drew its membership from a narrow stratum of old New England families — the Harrimans, the Whitneys, the Bundys — who went on to occupy positions of extraordinary influence across government, intelligence, and finance. Antony Sutton, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, spent years documenting the society's membership and its influence over American foreign and economic policy. His work, largely dismissed by mainstream academics, argued that Skull and Bones had functioned as the backbone of what he called "the American establishment" — a self-perpetuating network whose decisions shaped the country's direction regardless of which party held elected office.

The documented facts about the society's rituals come primarily from leaked accounts and a 2001 incident in which activists placed recording equipment near the initiation ceremony. What emerged were accounts of initiates lying in coffins, confessing their sexual histories, and being subjected to ritualised humiliation as a bonding mechanism. The society refers to non-members as "the barbarians." Its members call each other "knights." The Tomb is said to contain, among other artefacts, the skull of Geronimo — a claim that descendants of the Apache chief have pursued through legal action for decades, and which at least one Bonesman's letter appears to corroborate.

The conspiracy theory extends these documented facts into a claim about coordinated elite control.
