San Jose Science Center Scales Hands-On Engineering Education Across Kenya

The Tech Interactive, a science center based in San Jose, has developed a hands-on engineering education model that is transforming the way students in Kenya approach real-world problem-solving. Through the Tech Challenge Kenya, students are building creativity, collaboration, and design skills by participating in engineering challenges that simulate real-world scenarios. This initiative is part of The Tech Interactive's broader mission to expand access to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education globally, and it has already trained nearly 20,000 educators and reached over 568,000 students in Kenya.

The Tech Challenge Kenya showcases, held in Kisumu and Nakuru counties, saw 1,451 students from 247 teams test their collapsible shelter designs in a challenge called "Survive the Storm." This challenge aligns with Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum by providing students with hands-on opportunities to collaborate, think critically, and develop practical solutions to real-world challenges. The success of these showcases was supported by various sponsors and community partners, who contributed to creating a memorable experience for the students.
