Every July, in a 2,700-acre redwood grove in Monte Rio, California, approximately 2,500 of the most powerful men in the United States gather for a two-week retreat known as the Bohemian Grove encampment. They come from the highest levels of politics, business, military, media, and finance. They stay in rustic camps with names like Mandalay, Owl's Nest, and Cave Man. They drink heavily, they attend lectures from invited experts, they watch theatrical productions, and on the first night of the encampment, they participate in a ceremony called the Cremation of Care — in which a robed figure representing the weight of worldly concerns is symbolically burned before a giant stone owl called Moloch as a taped voice echoes through the trees. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is the publicly acknowledged, self-described tradition of one of the most exclusive private clubs in the world.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Bohemian Grove — what actually happens there, who attends, what has leaked or been documented over the decades, and what the ceremony of the Cremation of Care tells us — symbolically or otherwise — about how the men who run the world understand themselves and their relationship to power.

The Bohemian Club was founded in San Francisco in 1872 as a gathering for journalists and artists. Within decades, it had evolved into what it remains today: an invitation-only club where entry requires sponsorship by an existing member and a waiting list measured in years, if not decades. Its membership over the twentieth century reads like a parallel history of American power: Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon famously discussed the 1968 presidential race at the Grove, with Nixon later noting in a memo that the encampment was "the most faggy goddamn thing you could ever imagine" — a comment that has itself become a footnote in the club's documented history. Nixon and Reagan both attended. So did Henry Kissinger, Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, George Shultz, and both Bushes. The Manhattan Project — the programme that produced the atomic bomb — was planned in part at the Grove.

The conspiracy theory around Bohemian Grove exists on a spectrum. At one end, the reasonable concern: that the informal social environment of the Grove enables conversations and relationships between political and corporate figures that shape policy in ways that bypass democratic processes. When the Secretary of Defense, three former presidents, the CEO of a major defence contractor, and a senior central banker share a camp for two weeks, the resulting conversations are not subject to lobbying regulations, FOIA requests, or public scrutiny. Whatever is discussed at the Grove stays there — and the consequences, if any, emerge months or years later through official channels with no traceable origin.
