Episode 112: The Stanford Research Institute — Where Science Meets the CIA

The Stanford Research Institute — now known as SRI International — was founded in 1946 as a research arm of Stanford University, intended to apply the scientific capabilities developed during World War Two to peacetime commercial and industrial problems. By the 1970s, it had evolved into something considerably stranger: a contractor for the United States intelligence community conducting research into parapsychology — specifically, the use of psychic abilities for espionage purposes. The programme, eventually known as Stargate, paid scientists to investigate whether trained individuals could use remote viewing — the claimed ability to perceive locations and events at a distance using only their minds — to gather intelligence on Soviet military facilities, locate missing persons, or identify the contents of sealed rooms. This was not a fringe pursuit. It was funded by the CIA, the DIA, and eventually the Army, over a period of two decades, at a cost of tens of millions of dollars. In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine SRI's parapsychology programme — what was actually investigated, what the researchers claimed to find, and what the involvement of the US intelligence community in psychic research tells us about the stranger edges of Cold War science.

The primary SRI researchers in the parapsychology programme were physicists Russell Targ and Harold Puthoff. Their work in the 1970s, published in the prestigious journal Nature in 1974, claimed statistically significant results in remote viewing experiments conducted with subjects including Uri Geller — the Israeli entertainer famous for his claimed ability to bend spoons. The Nature paper was controversial: its reviewers noted that the experimental controls were inadequate and that the presence of the investigators themselves in the room with subjects created conditions for subtle cueing that could explain the results without invoking psychic ability. James Randi, the professional sceptic, spent considerable effort demonstrating that Geller's claimed abilities were replicable through conjuring techniques.

The Stargate programme continued, under various names, long after the Geller experiments. It evolved to focus on a more controlled form of remote viewing, developed by Ingo Swann and refined into a structured methodology. Some of the programme's practitioners — including Joe McMoneagle, who was awarded the Legion of Merit for his intelligence work — produced results that their handlers considered operationally useful, whether or not the mechanism was psychic. The programme was declassified and terminated in 1995, following an evaluation by the American Institutes for Research that concluded the results were not reliable enough for intelligence purposes, though it acknowledged that some sessions produced accurate information by unexplained means.
