Odysseus Can Cry and Men Can Too — But not like THAT

Odysseus Can Cry and Men Can Too — But not like THAT

Men are told to become emotionally available. Then a man cries publicly, and everybody immediately investigates whether his tears were justified.

Ryan Clark’s emotional podcast moment reopened the argument: Are men actually allowed to cry—or only under narrow conditions involving death, war, fatherhood, sports, or heroic sacrifice?

Johann Francis examines why male tears are treated as evidence that must be interpreted. A respected coach can cry before a football game. Michael Jordan can cry after winning a championship. Achilles and Odysseus can collapse in grief. But a man crying over rejection, criticism, or lost status may be accused of weakness, instability, or performance.

The healthier standard is not that every tear deserves applause.

It is that a man should be able to experience emotion without automatically surrendering his masculinity—and still remain responsible for what he does next.

You did the work. Why didn’t it work?
