Jeremiah 5–10 | Stand Ye in the Ways and See

Jeremiah searches the streets of Jerusalem for those who seek truth, but finds a people who have turned away from the Lord. Through the prophet, God warns Judah of approaching judgment, false worship, injustice, and confidence in outward religion without inward obedience.

Yet amid these solemn words comes a gracious invitation: “Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way.” Jeremiah calls the people back to faithful obedience, while grieving over their spiritual wounds and asking, “Is there no balm in Gilead?”

These chapters also contrast powerless idols with the living God, the everlasting King who made the earth by His power and established the world by His wisdom. “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there?”

Jeremiah 9:23–24

“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me.”

Jeremiah 10:6

“Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.”

Jeremiah 10:10

“But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king.”

Jeremiah 10:12

“He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.”
