Jay Howell Interview: Bob’s Burgers, Slash and DWP Festival Art

Cartoonist, illustrator, and festival artist Jay Howell joins host Hollie Nicole at Inkcarceration for a funny, fascinating conversation connecting animation, skate culture, tattoos, and the world of rock and metal festivals.

Jay shares how drawing for Vans, Antihero, Creature, and Burton Snowboards helped shape his career before Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard discovered his artwork at a San Francisco show. He also reveals the hilariously dark original concept for Bob’s Burgers and how his loose drawing style evolved when the series entered television development.

The story then takes a rock-and-roll turn as Jay explains how tattooing a creative director led to an unexpected offer to join the Danny Wimmer Presents festival circuit. That opportunity became one of his favorite jobs, allowing him to create festival artwork and draw musicians including Slash, Kerry King, Green Day, Insane Clown Posse, and Pierce the Veil.

Jay also discusses drawing dozens of fans each day, why attendees are just as important as the bands, and the artist still sitting at the top of his wish list. Plus, he teases upcoming Guns N’ Roses artwork, posters, merchandise, art shows, ShipRocked, and appearances at Louder Than Life, Bourbon & Beyond, Aftershock, and future DWP festivals.
