The God We Serve | Psalm 91:1–2

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” (Psalm 91:1–2 NLT)

In the first two verses of Psalm 91, the psalmist provides some great insights into the person of God by using four different titles for the Almighty.

In verse 1, the psalmist refers to “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High” (NLT). The name “Most High” comes from the Hebrew phrase El Elyon, which describes God as the One who owns and possesses everything. We can lay claim to nothing. Our possessions, our skills and abilities, even our very lives all belong to God. Embracing that truth creates within us a spirit of humility, which is the ideal posture before God.

Also in verse 1, the psalmist refers to “the shadow of the Almighty” (NLT). The name “Almighty” comes from the Hebrew word Shaddai, which emphasizes God’s power and sufficiency. Not only is the Lord the living God, but He is also the giving God. He possesses everything and wants to give us everything we need to thrive in our relationship with Him. He invites us to ask for anything, anytime and anywhere.

Then verse 2 begins with the phrase “This I declare about the Lord” (NLT). The term “Lord” comes from the Hebrew word Yahweh. This is the personal name God gave to Moses when He appeared to him from the burning bush. “God replied to Moses, ‘I am who i am. Say this to the people of Israel: I am has sent me to you.’ God also said to Moses, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations’” (Exodus 3:14–15 NLT). Yahweh is derived from the ancient Hebrew root word for “to be” and often translated “I will be who I will be.” Yahweh is God’s personal testimony that no one and nothing else defines who He is but Himself. Therefore, we know God by reading Scripture’s account of what He says about Himself.

Psalm 91:2 concludes with these words: “He is my God, and I trust him” (NLT). This word “God” comes from the Hebrew word Elohim, which is in the plural form. This is to say not that there are multiple gods but rather that there are three Persons of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

In these two compact verses, the psalmist tells us that the all-knowing, all-powerful God, who possesses Heaven and earth and is in a special covenant with us, wants to protect us and provide for our needs. This gives us great confidence in the God whom we worship and serve. We can call on His name anytime, and He will answer.
