Why an ADHD Diagnosis Can Feel So Emotional | My ADHD Journey • Part 3

Getting an ADHD diagnosis later in life can bring far more than relief. In Part 3 of her ADHD journey, Jenny shares the difficult road to getting assessed, the fear that she wouldn’t be believed, and the relief she felt when she finally heard that she did have ADHD.

She also explores what came afterwards, the grief for the years she spent not knowing, the anger around things she had been made to believe about herself, and how an adult ADHD diagnosis began to change the way she understood her past and herself.

  • Seeking answers

  • Fear of judgement

  • Feeling believed

  • Mixed emotions

  • Self understanding

  • Why is getting an ADHD diagnosis so emotional?

  • How does it feel to be diagnosed with ADHD as an adult?

  • Why can an ADHD diagnosis bring relief?

  • Why can you feel grief after an ADHD diagnosis?

  • Is it normal to feel angry after an ADHD diagnosis?

  • Why did I doubt myself before my ADHD assessment?

  • Why can getting an ADHD diagnosis feel overwhelming?

  • What emotions can come after a late ADHD diagnosis?

  • Can an ADHD diagnosis change how you see your childhood?

  • Why do adults seek an ADHD diagnosis?

  • Can ADHD make you question yourself?

  • Why do women get diagnosed with ADHD later in life?

  • What happens emotionally after an ADHD diagnosis?

  • How can an ADHD diagnosis change how you understand yourself?

Next week in Part 4… Jenny explores what happened after diagnosis and how understanding ADHD began to change the way she saw herself, her past and the things she had believed about herself for years. And how easily we can take other people’s words, reactions and expectations and turn them into beliefs about ourselves.

If you recognise that pattern, Jenny’s Blame Series explores why we can take responsibility for things that were never ours to carry and how easily we can come to believe we’re the problem.

Jenny's Judgement series explores how fear of being judged, self-judgement and other people's opinions can quietly shape the way we see ourselves.

Sometimes the greatest shift isn’t discovering who you are. It’s letting go of who you believed you had to be.

The moment you stop asking, “What’s wrong with me?” can be the moment you begin understanding yourself with compassion instead of criticism.

💜 Something special is here!

If you’ve been noticing the same thoughts, reactions, or emotional patterns repeating in your life, Jenny’s free Continued Writing session may help you understand what’s happening underneath them.

During this live session, Jenny will guide you through a gentle continued writing exercise designed to help you uncover subconscious patterns, emotional responses, and automatic behaviours that are often difficult to see on your own. You don’t need any experience with continued writing, just a pen, paper, and some space to be honest with yourself.

Register for the next webinar here!

If you can’t attend live, Jenny also shares continued writing prompts on her website to use in your own time: www.jennyfield.co.uk/product/continued-writing-freebie/
