"When leaders of God's people fall, the consequences extend far beyond the individual. In 2 Samuel 1, David responds to the deaths of Saul and Jonathan not with celebration, but with profound grief. Though Saul had spent years pursuing David's life, David recognizes that the fall of the Lord's anointed is a tragedy for the entire covenant community.

In this sermon, we examine David's lament as a model of godly sorrow. We consider why David mourns the downfall of the very man who persecuted him, why he longs that Israel's enemies would not rejoice over her defeat, and what Jonathan's death reveals about true covenant friendship and selfless devotion to the kingdom of God.

This passage also challenges us to examine our own hearts. Do we grieve over the spiritual condition of the church? Are we more concerned with personal victories than with the welfare of God's kingdom? David's lament calls believers to love Christ's church above personal interests and to pray earnestly for her restoration.
