She was only six or seven when she came back to the United States to live with a mother she barely knew and suddenly found herself surrounded by a blended family that felt just as unfamiliar. That Christmas, while the other children opened gift after gift, she received a single present: a porcelain doll unlike any she had ever seen.

It looked sad rather than sweet, with a ceramic tear on its face and a hunched posture that made it seem almost defeated. At first, it was simply an odd gift. Then things around the house began disappearing, toys behaved strangely, and the doll started falling from its shelf in ways that became harder and harder to explain.
