The modern conspiracy literature around Antarctica is extensive and multidimensional: ancient civilisations buried under the ice, Nazi bases in Neuschwabenland, the Hollow Earth entrance at the southern pole, and — in the version that has gained most traction in recent years — a collection of genuine historical anomalies that suggest the continent was not, in fact, unknown to the ancient world. In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the hidden history of Antarctica — the anomalous historical evidence, the classified research conducted there, the celebrity visits that conspiracy culture has found suspicious, and what the continent's genuine mysteries actually amount to.

The most intellectually serious element of the Antarctic mystery tradition concerns the Piri Reis map, drawn by Ottoman admiral Piri Reis in 1513, which appears to show a portion of the southern continent's coastline — a landmass that was not officially discovered until 1820. The map is real and held in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace. The debate about what it shows — whether the southern landmass is Antarctica, a speculative projection, or a distorted depiction of South America — has been ongoing since the map's rediscovery in 1929. Charles Hapgood, a cartography scholar at Keene State College, proposed in his 1966 book Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings that the Piri Reis map, and several other portolan charts, contained information that could only have come from an advanced civilisation with seafaring capability thousands of years before what conventional history allows. Hapgood was a credentialed scholar and Albert Einstein wrote a foreword to an earlier book of his. Most mainstream historians and cartographers have disputed his interpretation.

The classified dimension of Antarctic research concerns Operation Highjump — Admiral Byrd's 1946 expedition — and the subsequent patterns of high-profile visits to Antarctica by figures including Pope Francis, Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church, Buzz Aldrin, and former US Secretary of State John Kerry, all of which occurred within a relatively short period in 2016. The concentration of prominent global figures visiting Antarctica in the same year was interpreted by conspiracy researchers as evidence of a significant discovery — possibly a structure, a portal, or artefacts from a lost civilisation — that was being assessed by world leaders under the cover of routine visits. None of the visitors provided explanations considered adequate by conspiracy researchers.
