Coping Without Escaping

Coping Without Escaping

What happens when the way we cope becomes the way we avoid?

In this episode of Well Life Wednesday, Cristy explores thedifference between healthy coping and emotional escape. When stress, grief, anxiety, disappointment, relationship problems, trauma, or everydayresponsibilities become overwhelming, it can be tempting to numb, distract, isolate, overwork, oversleep, use substances, stay constantly busy, or avoidwhat we are feeling altogether.

While taking a break can be healthy, consistently escaping difficultemotions may prevent us from addressing what is really happening underneath thesurface.

During “Coping Without Escaping,” we discuss:

The difference between coping and avoidance
Why unhealthy coping strategies can feel helpful in the moment
How avoidance can reinforce anxiety and fear
Recognizing what you may be trying not to feel
Naming and understanding difficult emotions
Pausing before reacting impulsively
Healthy ways to regulate emotions
Building a personal “coping menu” before a crisis occurs
The importance of returning to problems after taking a healthy break
When distraction can be helpful—and when it becomes avoidance
Why saying “I’m fine” does not always mean we are emotionally well
Knowing when professional mental health support may be needed

💭 Reflection Question:
