Jeremiah 51–52 & Lamentations 1–2 | Tears over Jerusalem

Jeremiah 51–52 & Lamentations 1–2 | Tears over Jerusalem

In this Sleepy Scriptures One-Year Bible episode, we conclude the book of Jeremiah with chapters 51 and 52 and begin Lamentations with chapters 1 and 2, read from the King James Version.

Jeremiah’s final prophecy declares the coming judgment of Babylon, the empire that conquered Judah and destroyed Jerusalem. Then chapter 52 looks back upon Jerusalem’s fall: the city is besieged, the temple is burned, its treasures are carried away, and many of its people are taken into captivity.

From this devastation we enter the book of Lamentations, where grief is given a voice. Jerusalem is pictured as a lonely city mourning what has been lost. These opening chapters do not hurry past sorrow or offer easy explanations; instead, they bring suffering honestly before the Lord.

Yet even in these solemn passages, prayer remains possible. “Pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord.” Settle in with gentle narration, soothing music, and peaceful visuals as we move from Jeremiah’s closing prophecy into the heartfelt lament of a broken city seeking God amid the ruins.
