Murder In Moscow: The Moscow Police And The Briefing From December 14th 2022

One month after the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, Moscow police said investigators were still reconstructing the victims’ movements and trying to determine who was responsible. The department urged the public to rely on official information rather than rumors, warning that speculation had generated misleading tips and even harassment and threats against people connected to the case. Police said the investigation still involved substantial resources, including six Moscow detectives, five support staff, 46 FBI investigators, two FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit investigators, 13 Idaho State Police investigators and 15 state troopers. Investigators remained particularly interested in locating the occupant or occupants of a white 2011-2013 Hyundai Elantra seen near the King Road residence during the early morning hours of November 13, saying whoever was inside the vehicle could have critical information. At that point, police had not identified a suspect, had not recovered the murder weapon and were still asking for surveillance footage, tips and information about the victims’ activities before they returned home.

The December 13 update also consolidated much of what investigators had publicly established while addressing a growing list of rumors. Police said Goncalves and Mogen had returned home around 1:56 a.m., while Chapin and Kernodle were believed to have returned around 1:45 a.m.; the surviving roommates had been home by about 1 a.m. Officers reiterated that they did not believe the surviving roommates, the man seen at the food truck, the private driver, the man repeatedly called by Goncalves and Mogen, people present when 911 was called, or a former tenant were involved. Investigators said they had pursued hundreds of reports about a possible stalker but had not verified one, and they rejected suggested connections to unrelated stabbings, a skinned dog, a red Mustang and several other incidents circulating online. By then, detectives had received thousands of calls, emails and digital submissions, collected 113 pieces of physical evidence, taken roughly 4,000 crime-scene photographs and created multiple 3D scans of the residence. Police maintained that the murders were a targeted attack, but said they still had not determined whether the intended target was the house itself or one or more of its occupants.
