Episode 139: MH370 — The Plane That Disappeared

On March 8th, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport bound for Beijing carrying 239 people. Approximately forty minutes into the flight, at 1:19am local time, the co-pilot's voice — the last communication from the aircraft — transmitted "Good night, Malaysian three-seven-zero" to air traffic control. Radar contact was lost minutes later. The transponder was disabled. The plane turned around and flew back across the Malay Peninsula. Satellite data subsequently established that it continued flying for approximately seven more hours, turning south over the Indian Ocean, before disappearing somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. No distress signal was sent. No wreckage was found for over a year. One hundred and fourteen days after the disappearance, a fragment of the right flaperon washed up on Réunion Island. A handful of other debris pieces have since been confirmed as from MH370. The main wreckage has never been found. The cause of the disappearance has never been established. It is the greatest mystery in the history of commercial aviation.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine MH370 — the known facts, the satellite data that traced the final flight path, the specific theories proposed to explain what happened, and why this disappearance, above all others, has resisted the closure that normally follows aviation disasters.

The official Malaysian, Chinese, and Australian investigation concluded, without definitive physical evidence but based on satellite data analysis, that the aircraft crashed in the southern Indian Ocean. This conclusion is accepted by most aviation authorities and experts who have examined the data. The Inmarsat satellite data — which tracked the aircraft through its handshake pings with a satellite for the hours after the transponder was disabled — is the primary evidence, and its analysis, while technically sophisticated, has been reviewed and broadly accepted by independent experts.

The theories about what happened inside the cockpit are numerous. The most widely accepted among investigators is that the disappearance was deliberate — that either the captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, or the first officer, Fariq Abdul Hamid, deliberately disabled communications and diverted the aircraft, for reasons that remain unknown. A flight simulation found on Zaharie's home computer showed a flight path broadly consistent with MH370's actual southward turn, though the significance of this is disputed. No motive has been established. No communication was left.

The conspiracy theories range from the plausible — that the aircraft was shot down by a military and the event covered up — to the technically ambitious: that it was remotely hijacked, that it landed at Diego Garcia (the US military base in the Indian Ocean), that the passengers are alive somewhere, that the disappearance was connected to cargo it was carrying or to the group of Freescale Semiconductor employees among the passengers. None of these theories have produced evidence sufficient to overcome the satellite data's indication of a southern Indian Ocean crash site.
