The Odyssey, Episode 7: Ithaca, Unrecognized | Sleep Story

Odysseus finally sails for home in this episode — and then wakes up on his own shore not recognizing a single hill of it. There's something so real about that: the place you've been aching for your whole life not looking the way you built it up in your head, and having to trust it's really yours again before you can even take it in. If you've ever come back to somewhere you love after being away too long and needed a minute to actually believe you were there, this episode is for you. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

This is Episode 7 of a Dream With Jacob series adapting Homer's Odyssey as a bedtime sleep story, read from Samuel Butler's 1900 public-domain English translation (Roman god names swapped to their Greek originals — Zeus, Poseidon). It's timed to the cultural wave around the 2026 Nolan film, but adapts only Homer's original text, never the film's script or scenes.

Episode 7 covers Book XIII in full. The Phaeacians load Odysseus's ship with farewell gifts and send him to sleep so deeply on the crossing home that he doesn't wake even as the ship reaches Ithaca. Poseidon, still angry over the Cyclops, punishes the Phaeacians for their generosity by turning their returning ship to stone in sight of their own city. Odysseus wakes on his own shore under a mist Athena has placed there to keep him cautious, not recognizing any of it, and meets a young shepherd on the beach — who is Athena herself in disguise. Even overjoyed at hearing he's finally home, he can't quite stop himself from spinning her a false backstory instead of the truth, which delights rather than offends her. She reveals herself, clears the mist, and Odysseus finally recognizes his own island. She briefs him on what's waiting in his house — Penelope's long faithfulness, the suitors devouring his home, his son's danger — then transforms him into an old, unrecognizable beggar and sends him to the loyal swineherd Eumaeus to wait, while she goes to bring his son safely home. It's told gently, as a slow-moving narrative to rest inside rather than a guided meditation with direct instruction.

What's covered in this episode:

- The Phaeacians load Odysseus's ship with farewell gifts, and Queen Arete hands him a locked chest to guard himself.

- A deep, dreamless sleep carries Odysseus across the sea while the Phaeacian crew rows through the night.
