Aging Well Isn’t About Diet — It’s About What You Believe

Aging Well Isn’t About Diet — It’s About What You Believe

What if aging well isn't about diet, exercise, or genetics — but about what you believe about getting older? The research on positive aging is stunning: people with positive beliefs about their own aging live 7.5 years longer than people without them. Measured in people in their 50s and 60s, tracked for 23 years.

In this episode, health psychologist Dr. Mary Catherine George breaks down the science of aging beliefs and self-perception of aging — and the three places negative "old age" self-talk quietly does its damage: your memory, your movement, and your stress response.

You'll learn the three traps and the three small daily actions that counter them:

🧠 MEMORY — Why "senior moment" self-talk ("I'm losing it") makes you more anxious and makes remembering harder — and the once-a-day reframe that breaks the loop ("My brain is busy. It'll come to me.")

🚶 MOVEMENT — Walking speed is one of the strongest longevity signals we have: an adult whose walking speed drops sharply over two years has a 90% higher risk of dying. But in studies, people who reframed their beliefs about walking improved their speed — not because their body changed, but because their belief did.

😤 STRESS — How "am I too old for this?" thinking triggers cortisol and affects your heart — and the one-sentence morning journaling practice that, in just four weeks, improved memory, balance, and walking speed.

Plus: why nearly half of adults over 65 CAN improve in memory and movement, how our culture's aging story works against us, and MC's own reframe after two hip replacements — "I'm a warrior who has survived."
