The Reset Breath: Your Nervous System's Permission to Exhale

The Reset Breath: Your Nervous System's Permission to Exhale

Hey there, friend. It's Julia, and I'm so glad you're here. You know, early Sunday mornings can feel like that moment right before a storm—everything's quiet on the surface, but there's this electric restlessness underneath, isn't there? That's stress doing its thing. So today, we're going to give your nervous system permission to finally exhale. Let's start by getting comfortable wherever you are. Maybe that's your couch, your bed, or even your car before the week really begins. There's no wrong answer. Just find a place where your spine can be reasonably straight, and your shoulders can soften down away from your ears. Good. Now, I want you to notice your natural breathing for just a moment. Don't change it yet. Just observe it, like you're watching clouds pass through the sky. Some breaths might feel shallow, some deeper. That's all information, not judgment. Here's what we're going to do together. We're going to practice what I call the "Reset Breath," and it's honestly my favorite stress-busting trick because it works with your body's own biology, not against it. Think of stress as your nervous system stuck in overdrive. This technique is like gently taking your foot off the gas. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four. Feel that cool air moving in. One, two, three, four. Hold that breath for just a heartbeat. Now here's the magic part—exhale through your mouth for a count of six. Make it longer than the inhale. Longer exhalations actually tell your body it's safe. That you're not in danger. Let it out like you're fogging a mirror. Six, five, four, three, two, one. We're going to do this eight more times together. Inhale for four. Hold. Exhale for six. And again. Inhale, hold, exhale. Feel your shoulders getting heavier. Your jaw unclenching maybe. That tightness in your chest? It's loosening. Keep going at your own pace now. No rush. Just that same rhythm. In for four, out for six. You've got this. Beautiful. When stress shows up during your day—and it will—remember that your breath is always there, waiting to help. You can do this practice anytime. In meetings. Before important conversations. Before bed. It's your built-in reset button. Thank you so much for spending these minutes with me on Stress Relief. It truly means everything.
