The Air Florida Potomac River Disaster of 1982 | Episode 112

A pilot friend of mine spent more time practicing touch and go landings than anyone I’ve ever met. His reasoning was, that take-offs and in-flight procedures are irrelevant, the only thing that means anything is the landing. I asked, what if your take-off was your landing, and he said zero stars, do not recommend.

On today’s episode: you will learn what makes Florida such a sparkling tropical jewel for snow weary travellers; you will see what happens when a 200,000 lb plane lands on a 4,000 lb car; and you will hear about a disaster so incredible, a helicopter got put in a museum because of it.

As you’ll hear, this is actually our second trip to The Potomac. Our USS Princeton Explosion of 1844 episode actually takes place a short walk away from today’s story. And I’ve been excited to do this episode because I watched it all unfold live on TV as a child, and it made a real impression on me. Arguably, it wrote the part of me that would go on to do this show into my DNA.
