Could Your Entire Life Be Happening Inside a Simulation?

On April 28, 2003, philosopher Nick Bostrom published a paper that transformed an old philosophical doubt into a modern probability argument. If future civilizations become technologically mature, if consciousness can exist in non-biological systems, and if some descendants create enormous numbers of detailed simulations of their ancestors, then simulated observers could eventually outnumber biological ones.


But that is not a discovery that humanity lives in a simulation. Bostrom’s argument reaches a three-part conclusion: either civilizations like ours usually die before reaching that stage, mature civilizations almost never create conscious ancestor simulations, or simulated observers become numerically dominant. Each branch depends on assumptions that remain unsettled.


This episode follows the argument from René Descartes’ deceiver, through Hilary Putnam’s brain-in-a-vat challenge, to Seth Lloyd’s calculations of the universe’s information-processing limits. It examines Brian Weatherson’s objection to Bostrom’s probability reasoning, David Chalmers’ argument that virtual worlds could still be real, and a physics proposal by Silas Beane, Zohreh Davoudi, and Martin Savage that asked whether a particular lattice-style simulation might leave traces in ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.


No verified glitch, physical artifact, or experiment has established that our universe is artificial. Yet the hypothesis remains difficult to close completely, because a sufficiently faithful simulation might reproduce every physical result available to observers inside it.
