Softening Breath: Three Breaths to Teach Your Body Peace

Softening Breath: Three Breaths to Teach Your Body Peace

Hey there, friend. I'm Julia Cartwright, and I am so glad you're here with me today. You know, it's early Saturday morning as we're recording this, and I'm thinking about how this time of year—late summer bleeding into fall—can feel a little unsettled. Like you're caught between seasons. Maybe you're carrying some tension from the week, or you're already thinking about everything on your plate. So today, I want to give you something really simple but profoundly powerful: permission to just... let things be soft for a little while. Let's start by getting comfortable wherever you are. Sit up nice and tall, but not rigid—think of a tree that's strong but has branches that sway. Your shoulders can drop away from your ears. And if sitting feels uncomfortable, lying down is absolutely fine. This is your practice, and we're doing this together at whatever pace feels right. Now, I want you to bring your attention to your natural breath. Not changing it, not controlling it—just noticing. In through your nose, however that feels, and out through your mouth with just the tiniest sigh. Like you're fogging up a mirror. Feel that warmth leaving your body. That's your stress, your worry, your to-do list—it's all got permission to leave right now. Here's the main thing I want to guide you through today. It's called the softening breath, and it's changed my life when I'm running on empty. As you breathe in, imagine inhaling warmth and ease, like sunlight on your skin. Hold it for just a second. Then as you exhale, imagine every tight muscle in your body melting like butter on warm toast. Your shoulders, your jaw, your belly, your hands. Everything just softening. Do this with me for the next few breaths. In through that warmth... and out through that release. Again. Warmth in, softness out. One more time. You're doing beautifully. And here's what's so cool about this: your body doesn't know the difference between real relaxation and the feeling of relaxation. So by practicing this softening, you're literally teaching your nervous system what peace feels like. You're creating a muscle memory for calm. As you move through the rest of your day, whenever you notice tension creeping back in—and it will, because you're human—come back to this image. Warmth in, softness out. Just three breaths. That's it. That's your anchor. Thank you so much for spending this time with me on the Relaxation podcast. If this landed with you, please subscribe wherever you're listening. You deserve this kind of gentleness, and I'm honored to be your guide. Until next time, breathe easy. For great deals today, check out https://amzn.to/47ZqpWT
