What does it really mean that Jesus is called the Prince of Peace?

In this final message from the series on Isaiah 9:6, we explore the meaning behind one of Scripture’s most familiar titles for Jesus. While we often think of peace as quiet circumstances, fewer problems, or a break from the pressures of life, biblical peace goes much deeper.

Isaiah's announcement is a royal one: a King is coming. Jesus is not simply someone who helps us feel peaceful—He came to establish peace. His kingdom is different from the kingdoms of this world. Rather than conquering through military power, Jesus conquered through the cross, giving His life even for those who were His enemies.

The message explores the biblical concept of shalom—wholeness, completeness, well-being, and life as God intended it to be. Beginning with Eden, we see how sin shattered humanity's peace with God and how Jesus came to restore what was broken.

The sermon then considers two dimensions of peace:

Peace with God — Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, humanity can be reconciled to God.

The peace of God — Even when circumstances remain difficult, Jesus offers a peace that is not dependent on everything going according to plan.

Through the story of Jesus calming the storm, we are reminded that sometimes God calms the storm around us, and sometimes He brings peace to us while we are still in the storm.

But the message doesn't end with receiving peace. If Jesus is truly the Prince of Peace, His peace should become visible through the lives of His followers. We are called to be peacemakers—in our marriages, families, churches, workplaces, friendships, disagreements, and everyday interactions.

The message ultimately brings us to one question:

Is the Prince of Peace ruling me?

Isaiah connects the increase of Jesus' government with the increase of His peace. The more we surrender to His rule, the more room His peace has to reign in our lives.

Whether you're facing anxiety, conflict, uncertainty, hurt, unforgiveness, or simply longing for a deeper relationship with God, this message points us back to Jesus—the One Isaiah saw centuries before Bethlehem:

Wonderful Counselor.
Mighty God.
Everlasting Father.
Prince of Peace.
