Sandra Birchmore’s Suicide Ruling Became WHAT?!

Sandra Birchmore’s case reaches federal court with the original death ruling already rewritten. The Massachusetts medical examiner once classified her death as suicide. On April 30, 2026, the office changed the manner to undetermined and shortened the listed cause from asphyxia by hanging to asphyxia.

That matters because Matthew Farwell’s defense is preparing to argue suicide. Judge Denise Casper has ruled that jurors may hear evidence about Sandra’s mental-health history and prior suicidal thoughts. The defense says those records support its theory. Prosecutors say the jury should also hear how Sandra’s relationship with Farwell began and why they believe her death was staged.

Sandra entered the Stoughton Police Explorers program at 12. Federal prosecutors allege Farwell, then a police officer and program instructor, began an unlawful relationship with her when she was 15 and he was 27. They allege he later killed her to stop disclosure of his conduct. Farwell denies killing Sandra and has pleaded not guilty.
The Stoughton Police Department’s own internal review found that three former officers — Matthew Farwell, his twin brother William, and former deputy chief Robert Devine — had inappropriate relationships with Sandra. William Farwell and Devine are not defendants in the federal criminal case.

Prosecutors say the initial death investigation treated the scene as noncriminal almost immediately. In federal court papers, they say local investigators reported “no foul play” to the medical examiner within roughly an hour. They also say investigators did not compel Farwell’s DNA or seize his electronic devices during that early work.
The federal prosecution now points to evidence it says was missed or never pursued. Prosecutors have said Farwell was a major DNA contributor on the duffel-bag strap found at the scene. The defense disputes how that evidence should be read. The trial is scheduled to begin October 5, 2026.
