Combing Sedna’s Hair: When the People Who Need You Are the Ones Who Threw You Overboard

Combing Sedna’s Hair: When the People Who Need You Are the Ones Who Threw You Overboard

In the Inuit story of Sedna, a father trying to save himself throws his daughter into the freezing sea and cuts away the fingers with which she clings to his boat. Those severed fingers become the animals that sustain the community, while Sedna becomes the powerful keeper of the sea below. Psychologically, it is a remarkable story about betrayal, dependency, resentment, and the strange experience of becoming indispensable to the very people who have benefited from your wounds.
