A Prayer for Strife in Friendships

When a close friend begins to embrace theological views that feel like a personal betrayal, the temptation is not always to lash out directly. Sometimes it is subtler — social media posts crafted in response, conversations with others about what is happening, a quiet but determined effort to be the one who is right. The behavior can be dressed up in the language of righteous anger and concern for truth, and it can feel entirely justified from the inside. But James 3:16 names what is actually at work when jealousy and selfish ambition take root: disorder and every vile practice.

The honest reckoning this episode offers is both convicting and freeing. The disagreement with a friend over theology was real, but the deeper issue was not a passion for truth — it was a need to win, to be right, to silence rather than to understand. James 3:17 describes what wisdom from above actually looks like: pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. These are not qualities we can manufacture through sheer effort. They require God's grace, a willingness to go directly to the person rather than around them, and the humility to be more concerned with God being right than with winning an argument. The friendship did not survive the strife, and the damage of selfishness and stubbornness left a wound that repentance healed spiritually even if the relationship did not fully recover. That loss became one of the most significant lessons available: how to handle disagreement with others-focused grace, peace, and gentleness — not with emotions at the wheel.

Ponder Today

1. Jealousy and selfish ambition produce disorder — even when disguised as righteous concern. The desire to be right, to win, or to silence someone we disagree with is not the same as a passion for truth. James 3:16 is direct about what those motives actually produce.
2. Wisdom from above looks entirely different from wisdom from below. Pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy — these qualities are the marks of heavenly wisdom at work in a conflict. They require God's grace, not just good intentions.
3. Strife in relationships grows when we turn inward instead of toward the other person. Talking about someone rather than to them, crafting responses for an audience rather than having a direct conversation — these habits deepen division rather than address it.
4. In disagreements about truth, be more concerned with God being right than with winning. Our goal is to point others toward Him, not to establish our own theological superiority. That shift in motivation changes everything about how we engage.
5. Repentance opens the door to growth, even when it cannot fully restore what was lost. The willingness to honestly name our selfishness, receive God's forgiveness, and allow the experience to teach us is how strife becomes wisdom for the next relationship and the next disagreement.

A Prayer for You Today

Heavenly Father, I know that because of Your Son's sacrifice, I have been freed from the power and punishment of sin — but until I see You face to face, the presence of sin still exists in me. I will often be faced with the temptation to choose my own way over Yours. Lord, I do not want strife, division, and chaos to rule in my heart and life. I long to walk in Your wisdom, becoming others-focused and showing Your mercy and pure peace to my friends. Forgive me when I choose selfishness over selflessness, especially in disagreements. I need Your empowering grace to fight the temptation to always be the one who is right. Your truth matters — but only because You are the One who is right, and I want to point others to You, not to myself. Thank You for mercy that is new every morning. In Jesus' name, Amen.
