This segment covers Portugal's drug decriminalization model and why it worked there but failed in Portland Oregon, the Florida pain clinic epidemic and why 90 of the top 100 OxyContin prescribers in the country were operating in a single state, the American Pain documentary and the DEA takedown of the George Brothers, the Insys Pharma whistleblower story and the Sackler family accountability failure, cartel presence in small town Georgia and why rural America is where CJNG operates most effectively, the predator hunting groups on YouTube and the context that mainstream coverage consistently strips out, and the CJNG scam empire that Van Zeller is now documenting for her new Nat Geo series Super Scam Me. The Portugal decriminalization and Florida pain clinics thread is the episode's most policy-specific and most institutionally revealing contribution. Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001 and produced documented reductions in drug-related deaths HIV infections and incarceration — the specific policy mechanisms that made it work and why those mechanisms have failed to translate to American cities like Portland are examined by Van Zeller who has covered drug policy from the inside of the systems that produce it. The Florida pain clinic story is the most alarming single data point in the entire American opioid narrative — 90 of the top 100 OxyContin prescribers in the country operating out of a single state, 300 to 400 pills per month to individual patients, doctor shopping across multiple providers, and a mother who lost both sons to overdoses sitting across from Van Zeller and explaining what the system actually looked like from the family's perspective. The American Pain and Sacklers thread is the episode's most institutionally damning and most personally significant contribution. The George Brothers — Justin and Chris George — ran American Pain the largest OxyContin clinic in the United States from a strip mall in Fort Lauderdale. The DEA and FBI investigation that brought them down involved a car chase surveillance and the specific institutional determination to pursue a case that the two-tiered justice system had been designed to prevent. The Insys Pharma whistleblower story is the most alarming corporate crime account in the entire opioid narrative — the whistleblower's specific job was to lie to insurance companies claiming every patient they were submitting had cancer. The only pharma executive to ever do time. And the Sacklers who bear more responsibility for more deaths than any of the above are still doing well. The cartel in small town Georgia thread is the episode's most geographically alarming and most personally significant contribution. CJNG does not operate primarily in border cities or major metropolitan areas. Small town America is where they operate most effectively — where local law enforcement has the fewest resources the most limited experience with cartel operations and the most vulnerable populations. Van Zeller documents a horrific crime in Georgia captured entirely on AirBnB property cameras and examines the specific bureaucratic corruption that allows cartel infrastructure to establish itself in communities that have no framework for recognizing or responding to it. **Inside This Clip:** - Portugal's decriminalization model — why it worked there and why it failed in Portland Oregon - 90 of the top 100 OxyContin prescribers were in Florida — the pain clinic epidemic examined - American Pain the George Brothers and the DEA and FBI investigation that brought them down - The Insys Pharma whistleblower whose job was to lie to insurance companies about cancer diagnoses - The only pharma executive to ever do time — and the Sacklers who are still doing well - CJNG presence in small town Georgia — the AirBnB camera evidence and bureaucratic corruption - Why rural America is where CJNG operates most effectively and with the least resistance ***TIMESTAMPS*** 00:00 - Portugal's Decriminalization & Florida's Pain Clinics 09:59 - American Pain the George Brothers & the DEA 20:45 - Insys the Sacklers & Two-Tiered Justice 29:32 - Cartel Presence in Small Town Georgia 40:27 - Predator Hunters Context & Trafficking in America 51:07 - CJNG Scam Empire & Super Scam Me @JulianDoreyDaily Learn more about your ad choices.
