E151: The Number That Isn't Your Whole Story: The ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Study and Your Resilience Score

E151: The Number That Isn't Your Whole Story: The ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Study and Your Resilience Score

"I don't really think my childhood counts — nothing that dramatic happened." If you've ever said some version of that to yourself, this episode is for you.

The ACE study followed over 17,000 adults and found something that changed how medicine understands the link between childhood and adult health: the more categories of adversity a person experienced growing up, the more it shapes their health decades later — in a clear, dose-response pattern. But the ACE score has real limits, and most people have never heard of its quieter, more hopeful companion tool: the Resilience Questionnaire, which measures not what happened to you, but what protected you — and what you can still build more of today.

Walk away understanding:

  • What the ACE study actually measured, and why adversity doesn't have to look dramatic from the outside to be real
  • The three real limits of the ACE score — so you can use it without dismissing your history or being defined by it
  • What the Resilience Questionnaire measures, why one reliable relationship in childhood changes everything, and why resilience factors remain buildable in adulthood, on purpose, at any age

Take both instruments this week (linked below) somewhere quiet — and if anything surfaces that feels like a lot, bring it to your therapist rather than sitting with it alone. Then identify one relationship in your life right now that could become more reliable, more consistent — that's exactly what Wednesday's episode helps you build.
