Caleb Flynn Blew Past His Own Deadline — Then Showed Up on Valentine’s Day

He blew past January. He showed up on Valentine’s Day. She took him back. That three-sentence summary of Caleb Flynn and Alleigha Botner’s relationship tells psychotherapist Shavaun Scott more than most of the trial testimony combined.

Scott joins Tony Brueski to unpack the behavioral mechanics behind the eighteen-month holding pattern at the heart of the Caleb Flynn murder trial. The January deadline was supposed to be the end. Botner told Flynn to leave his wife Ashley or she was done. Flynn ignored it without explanation. They separated. Six weeks later, on Valentine’s Day, he returned — and Botner took him back.

Scott says that’s not weakness. It’s intermittent reinforcement — the same behavioral loop that keeps a gambler feeding the machine. The brain doesn’t process six weeks of silence as evidence that the relationship is over. It processes the Valentine’s Day return as a jackpot. The longer the drought, the more powerful the reconnection feels. It’s a chemical response, and it overrides the logic that told her to set the deadline in the first place.

Flynn, meanwhile, believed he could keep all of it — his marriage to Ashley, his children, his reputation at CLC church, and Botner waiting in the wings. Scott identifies a specific psychological profile: a man whose compartmentalization is so complete that he doesn’t experience his double life as contradictory. He experiences it as managed.

The sunk-cost fallacy sealed Botner in. Eighteen months of secrecy, missed holidays, and emotional investment made walking away feel like admitting she’d wasted a year and a half of her life. Scott explains why that math keeps people locked in — and what the research says about the only approach that actually reaches someone trapped in this kind of situation.
