The Goncalves Family And Their Comments On The Reinstatement Of The Firing Squad In Idaho

The Goncalves family, particularly Kaylee Goncalves’ father Steve, was outspoken in supporting Idaho’s return to the firing squad as an execution method while Bryan Kohberger’s case was still headed toward trial. Steve said he was not merely following the legislation but was actively involved in pushing for it, making clear that if Kohberger were convicted and sentenced to death, he wanted the state to have a reliable way to carry out that sentence. The family argued that lethal injection was too uncertain and too prone to delay, while a firing squad was direct, final and far more difficult to obstruct through shortages of execution drugs or years of litigation over the method. Steve framed the issue as one of accountability, saying that the punishment for someone convicted of murdering four young people should actually be enforceable rather than existing only on paper.

The family’s position became even more pointed after Kohberger accepted a plea deal in July 2025 that removed the death penalty entirely. Kristi Goncalves later said she was disappointed that Kohberger would never face the firing squad, while the family criticized the death penalty system as effectively meaningless if prosecutors could use it as leverage only to bargain it away. Their support for the firing squad was therefore never abstract policy discussion. They viewed it through the lens of what happened to Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, and they believed that a defendant convicted of those murders should have faced the ultimate punishment. Kohberger’s plea agreement ensured that would never happen, leaving the Goncalves family openly frustrated that Idaho was strengthening its ability to carry out death sentences at virtually the same moment prosecutors took that possibility off the table in his case.
