Sandra Birchmore's Sign Said THIS to the Cop Charged With Killing Her

The sign was homemade and sprinkled with glitter, and Sandra Birchmore made it for a Stoughton police officer. Federal prosecutors say that officer, Matthew Farwell, walked into her building masked on the night of February 1, 2021, strangled her, and staged a hanging. This is the whole Sandra Birchmore story, both parts in one episode, released before his trial in Boston. It starts in March 2010, when a 12-year-old with no father applied to the Stoughton Police Explorers because she wanted to be a cop.

In between is the department. Robert Devine ran the Explorers and rose to deputy chief; Stoughton demoted him for lying and kept him. The Farwell twins came back as his instructors. The department's investigators found Matthew Farwell's inappropriate relationship with Sandra began at 15, and that William Farwell and Devine crossed the line with her as an adult. The town could produce one year of program paperwork and no youth-protection training records for anyone.

Sandra told Farwell she was pregnant on December 28, 2020. Prosecutors say his reply was that he had nothing to say, and that he later shoved her to the ground over a sonogram. A friend reported him to the Stoughton Police Department on January 20, 2021; the FBI says the report went to Farwell. Prosecutors say he copied her key on January 24. His wife was due on February 2. On February 1 he texted Sandra: "come by for a second."

The state marked her death a suicide the day she was found, accepted his refusal of a DNA sample, and by the end of 2021 was building a larceny case. The Norfolk DA declined to prosecute in 2022. The FBI arrested Farwell in August 2024. He has pleaded not guilty and his defense says she died by suicide. Jury selection begins October 5, 2026.
