French Unrest Spreads, Musk A Trillionaire Again, Britain's Jobless Recovery

Your morning briefing. All the news you need to start your day.

On today's podcast:

(1) Hundreds of French high schools will shut Tuesday as teacher unions join a student-led protest movement demanding more money for education.

(2) The cost of insuring French banks’ bonds against default has jumped above that of other European lenders as concerns about France’s fiscal and political situation spill over into credit markets.

(3) Germany and France are urging the European Union to adopt new powers that could sever China or other countries from its single market, as the bloc’s two biggest economies adopt a more confrontational stance ahead of talks in Beijing.

(4) President Donald Trump said fresh threats of terror attacks prompted the US to move its B-1 bombers from their base in the UK, contradicting his top diplomat who had earlier described the move as part of a regular rotation.

(5) Yemen’s armed forces wrested control of the Red Sea city of Mocha on Monday after battles with the Iran-backed Houthis, according to state-run Saba, which puts the internationally recognized government closer to taking over the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

(6) Moonshot AI has closed the final round of private fundraising at a valuation of about $50 billion and is heading toward an initial public offering in Hong Kong in the first quarter of next year, according to people familiar with the matter.

(7) Elon Musk is a trillionaire again. The fortune of the world’s richest person jumped by $65 billion on Monday to $1.04 trillion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as the value of his stakes in SpaceX and Tesla Inc. rose.

(8) The UK economy has outpaced its major European peers in the two years since Labour came to power. That’s not helping the 1.8 million people looking for work.
