Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 1 - Five Words From His Roommate

Rob and Michele Reiner sat in a circle of chairs at a Malibu treatment center in 2009 for every family session their 15-year-old son was given, and the boy across the circle remembers them for it. He remembers Nick Reiner for something else. Danny Svilar, Nick's roommate that summer, told a reporter in 2026 why the arrest in the Rob Reiner murder case didn't surprise him, and his reason opens chapter one of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story.

Svilar says the facility ran about $60,000 a month and that Nick treated it like something he was owed. A pompous little punk, in his words, with no sense of gratitude. He says Nick went after another kid in the program and once turned on him. He says the nights were the worst part, because that was when Nick talked.

The series traces where that boy came from. Carl Reiner created The Dick Van Dyke Show. Rob Reiner made The Princess Bride and A Few Good Men. Michele Singer, a photographer, met Rob on the set of When Harry Met Sally, and Rob rewrote the ending of his own movie after he met her. Before Nick's first Christmas, his parents signed The Nick Reiner Children's Trust. An interventionist was in the living room by the time he was 14. Over the next seven years he was placed in 17 or 18 programs and chose shelters over counselors in three states. He shot heroin for the first time on Skid Row with someone he met in treatment, and he told a magazine that surviving all of it was luck.

In 2015 his parents apologized to him in the Los Angeles Times. Then they made his version into a movie and premiered it on his 22nd birthday. Tony lays out who paid, who kept paying, and what the professionals said that two devoted parents chose not to hear. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.
