Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 2 - What Rob Told the Radio

At Thanksgiving 2018, Rob Reiner lifted a turkey leg at the head of a table for twenty and asked everyone what they were grateful for. One of the guests later told a newspaper what that dinner was like: air freshener in the billiard room, screaming and cursing, and a longtime household employee who had threatened to quit because Nick's outbursts had become so violent. Seven years later Rob sat down in a public radio studio and was asked about that son. What he answered opens chapter two of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story.

Between the dinner and the studio, the Nick Reiner case stopped being anecdotes and became paperwork. LAPD logs show a welfare check at the house on February 25, 2019, and a call coded mental on September 27 of that year. In 2020 a judge placed Nick under a Lanterman-Petris-Short conservatorship, which meant that for one year a court-appointed conservator could decide where he lived and what medication he took. The diagnosis in that period, according to people with knowledge of his treatment, was schizophrenia and later schizoaffective disorder. The order expired in 2021, and nobody has said why it wasn't renewed.

The guesthouse came first. Nick told a podcast he punched it to pieces during a run on uppers, and by his account a later flight to Boston for treatment ended with him passing out and waking up in a hospital. The years after the conservatorship hold a trust payment of at least $558,000 he never took, a family dinner in Las Vegas, a red carpet, and a reported medication change. They end at a holiday party at Conan O'Brien's house where, by several accounts, a man in a hoodie asked his parents' friends whether they were famous.

Tony follows Rob and Michele through nine years of staying. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.
