Armed Men Cross Into NATO Territory, Sabotage Border Security

I examine reports that at least 20 migrants were forced across the Latvia-Belarus border by armed masked men, followed hours later by an alleged incursion in which the same men damaged an electrical box, removed two surveillance cameras, and withdrew into Belarus. Latvia is NATO territory, and the central question is whether this was a deliberate test of Latvia’s—and the Alliance’s—response threshold.

I also connect this episode to Moscow’s expanding narrative that Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are “neo-fascist” states oppressing Russian speakers—the same rhetorical framework Russia used before its war against Ukraine. I cover the Russian strike that reportedly killed 25 people in Ukraine, NATO’s Military Committee visit to Kyiv, European sanctions and support, North Korean backing for Russia, winter attacks on Ukrainian utilities, and U.S.-Iceland security cooperation. Deterrence is not simply a statement of resolve; it depends on what happens when provocations cross the border.
