Trump’s Team Floats Nord Stream Deal to End the War

The Trump administration is exploring a surprising possibility--American investors taking a stake in Russia's Nord Stream pipelines as part of a broader effort to end the war in Ukraine. According to Reuters, Jared Kushner and Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev have discussed potential investment arrangements that could restore Russian gas flows to Europe. But there's a remarkable contradiction. In 2018, Trump warned Germany that dependence on Russian energy was a dangerous strategic mistake. Now his team is considering economic cooperation with Moscow as a possible pathway toward peace.

I examine the Reuters revelations, Trump's earlier warnings, Germany's opposition, and the growing evidence of Russian threats against European security. I also cover NATO's Baltic Sea options, Russia's demands against International Criminal Court officials, the devastating attacks on Ukrainian civilians, South Korea's diplomatic dispute with Ukraine, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio's assessment of the increasingly difficult prospects for peace.

The central issue is whether economic incentives can genuinely change Putin's calculations—or whether restoring Nord Stream would simply return financial and strategic leverage to Russia.
