Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster - One Word for Those Nights

Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster - One Word for Those Nights

On September 15, 2026, Nick Reiner's public defender told a Los Angeles courtroom that he has a serious mental illness and a long history of self-medicating. His circumstances, she said, show how hard it is for people like him to get treatment. Seventeen years earlier, in a $60,000-a-month room at a Malibu treatment center, a 15-year-old Nick talked every night after lights out, and the boy in the next bed has one word for it. That word, and why he chose it, is where Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story begins, and the full series runs from that room to that courtroom in one cut.

The defense's version is that he was sick, he self-medicated, and the system failed him. The record says help was brought to his door eighteen times. He said he quit heroin because he got sick of it. A podcast host who liked him wrote that he regretted being one more person who wanted Rob Reiner's attention more than Nick's. A friend recalled Nick making the family housekeeper drive across town to bring him home to use his own bathroom. When the state could finally compel his medication, in 2020, the order lasted one year and nobody renewed it. Lindsay Clancy, another defendant with a serious mental illness, sought psychiatric help repeatedly before her children died and got days in a hospital bed.

Three parts, one through line. The boy who said he picked the persona. The man who moved into the guesthouse and never left. The defendant whose lawyers, two days after the death penalty came off the table at his siblings' request, went to court for $325,017.49 of his grandfather's money. Tony lines up thirty-two years of what two parents gave against what their son gave back. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty.
