Murder In Moscow: Bobby Chacon And His Take On The Murders

Former FBI special agent Bobby Chacon said the Moscow murders appeared to involve a killer who had gone into the King Road house with a plan, even if that plan did not unfold exactly as intended. In discussing Bryan Kohberger after his arrest, Chacon said he believed the killer may originally have expected to encounter fewer victims and was forced to adapt once inside the house. He also theorized that the surviving roommate may have been spared because she was not part of that plan and because the killer was physically exhausted and focused on getting out after committing four murders. Chacon repeatedly made clear that this was his interpretation of the known evidence, not something established by investigators at the time.

Chacon was particularly struck by cellphone evidence suggesting Kohberger returned to the area of the King Road house around 9 a.m. the morning after the killings. He described revisiting a crime scene as behavior sometimes seen in offenders who want to observe the aftermath of what they have done, speculating that Kohberger may have expected to see police cars, ambulances and emergency activity outside the home. Chacon considered the possibility that Kohberger returned because he realized he had left the knife sheath behind, but said he thought it was more likely that he went back to see the “fruits” of his actions. He viewed that alleged return, when considered alongside the vehicle, cellphone and other evidence, as one of the more disturbing aspects of the case and as potentially important evidence of the killer’s mindset after the murders.
