Christa Pike’s Execution Team Missed WHAT?!

Christa Pike’s September 30 execution attempt failed after Tennessee administered two doses of pentobarbital and she remained alive. Her attorneys now say the IV process included at least seven needle sticks, a needle bent at a 90-degree angle, and injuries to both arms that were documented after she reached the hospital.

One of the most striking details comes from Pike’s own legal team: they say she was actively helping the IV team identify possible access points. That claim sits beside another documented failure from the same state only four months earlier. On May 21, Tennessee halted Tony Carruthers’ execution after officials could not establish the required backup line and a central-line attempt failed.

The Carruthers litigation produced sworn testimony that the physician assigned to that central-line procedure, Dr. Mark Fowler, had not placed one since 2013 and did not have current hospital privileges. His role in Pike’s September 30 procedure is disputed in current reporting, so the confirmed issue is broader than one doctor: Tennessee entered Pike’s execution with a recent failed IV case already on the books.

Carruthers’ sister later filed a complaint alleging that he suffered a stroke and partial paralysis after the May attempt. Pike’s attorneys say she was left unconscious and on a ventilator after the September attempt. Those are separate claims with different evidentiary status, but together they have forced Tennessee to confront the consequences of its execution protocol.
