Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to hospital on Tuesday morning for an operation to remove a lump from his lung, the Vatican said.

Pope Leo XIV will undergo admission to Rome's Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital late Tuesday morning for a surgical procedure to remove a localized lung nodule.
The Vatican press office confirmed this timeline following the 71-year-old pontiff's unexpected announcement during his Sunday Angelus prayer. This procedure represents the first hospitalization of his papacy since his election on May 8, 2025.

The surgery will address a pulmonary nodule—a small, localized growth of tissue—that physicians identified at a very early stage during recent routine medical checkups. The Vatican anticipates a recovery period of approximately one week at Gemelli Hospital to support complete healing.

Outside oncologists note that when a localized nodule is found to be malignant, surgical removal at such an early stage provides an excellent prognosis. The Chicago-born pope, recognized for his robust constitution and active lifestyle, maintained a full schedule of private audiences on Monday, speaking in a strong, clear voice.

The operation will take place at the renowned Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic, a major non-profit Catholic teaching hospital in Rome.
The facility houses a specialized, highly secure papal apartment on its 10th floor. Equipped with a private chapel, this suite was extensively used by St. John Paul II—who affectionately referred to the hospital as "Vatican III" alongside the Vatican and Castel Gandolfo—and was subsequently used by Pope Francis.

Leo also has a significant trip scheduled Nov. 6-17 to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. It remains uncertain whether the surgery and recovery will impact the comprehensive itinerary, which includes a dozen flights, two helicopter rides and considerable altitude changes in Peru. Leo indicated earlier in his remarks Sunday that he still intended to undertake the trip.
