Why Christa Pike's Executioners Quit After the Second Dose

After an hour of failed IV attempts and two doses of pentobarbital on September 30, 2026, the Tennessee execution team stopped, cut the chamber microphone, and called an ambulance for Christa Pike. The Department of Correction later explained why: its protocol allowed nothing beyond what had been done. Pike, 50, sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, became the first person on record to survive after lethal injection drugs were administered. Her lawyers say she has a lifelong blood disorder and small veins and that the state was warned months in advance. Governor Bill Lee called it deeply disturbing, and the Attorney General brought in former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton to run an independent review.
