Mega Edition: Bryan Kohberger And The Bouncing Trial Date (10/13/26)

Bryan Kohberger’s murder trial went through several different projected start dates before it ultimately never happened at all. After his May 2023 arraignment, the case was initially set for trial on October 2, 2023, but that date disappeared when Kohberger waived his right to a speedy trial in August 2023 so the defense could have more time to prepare. The court later set a new trial date of June 2, 2025, with Judge John Judge anticipating a lengthy proceeding that could stretch through the summer. That schedule was disrupted after the case was moved out of Latah County because of concerns about pretrial publicity and potential juror prejudice. Once the case was reassigned to Ada County Judge Steven Hippler, the June date was abandoned and the trial was rescheduled for August 2025.

Even the August schedule kept changing. The court initially planned for the trial to begin August 11, 2025, with jury selection starting in late July, but Hippler later pushed opening statements to approximately August 18 and moved voir dire to August 4. The defense continued seeking additional delays, citing the enormous amount of preparation required in a death-penalty case and publicity surrounding the prosecution, but Hippler rejected a broader continuance. In the end, none of those trial dates mattered: on June 30, 2025, only weeks before jury selection was supposed to begin, Kohberger agreed to plead guilty to all four murders and burglary in exchange for the death penalty being taken off the table. What began as an October 2023 trial became a June 2025 trial, then an August 2025 trial, and finally no trial at all.
