Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, Part 2 - Bone in Her Jacket Pocket

The piece of Colleen Slemmer's skull that Christa Pike carried to breakfast on January 13, 1995, spent the weekend in a black leather jacket on an office chair at the Knoxville Job Corps center. Pike had left it there Friday afternoon. On Tuesday morning an officer reached into the inside pocket and found the bone. He drove it to a forensic anthropologist at the University of Tennessee, who set it into the one space still empty in Colleen's reconstructed skull. Chapter two of Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, the Hidden Killers documentary on the Colleen Slemmer murder, is how that bone got from the agricultural campus to a pocket, and what Pike said along the way.

In her recorded statement she claimed she never planned to kill Colleen, only to fight her, and she packed a box cutter and a miniature meat cleaver for the fight. She said she started hearing voices that told her Colleen would send her to prison, a claim nothing in the record supports. She said Colleen screamed and screamed, got up and ran, and was caught. She said she threw a rock. She said they dragged Colleen by the feet toward some trees, and that she pulled the rag from her own hair and tied it across Colleen's mouth to stop her talking.

The next afternoon she drank two fountain cups of Mad Dog 20/20 before walking up to the crime-scene tape. On January 14 she waived her rights, talked to investigator Randy York on tape, and walked him along the route to the exact spot where the body had been found. Tony tracks the six days that ended with the bone fitting perfectly. Chapter three is the trial, the letter she signed Little devil, and the prison phone calls.
